What qualifications do you have?
GCSEs all A-B in: English Lit, English Lang, Maths, Further Maths, Geography, Drama, French, ICT, Business Studies, RE, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. A-Levels in Geography (C), Physics (E) and Maths AS (D). 2:1 in BSc Applied Geology from Plymouth Uni, and a 2:1 in MSc Mining Environmental Management from Camborne School of Mines, Uni of Exeter
What does a Community Engagement and Education Officer do?
A community engagement and education officer dedicates their time to educating people about a particular topic. Visiting schools, universities, and public events to engage and excite people.
Apart from formal qualifications, what other skills or characteristics do you need in your role?
Confidence in public speaking, an understanding of how to communicate, the ability to stay calm, creative thinking and problem solving.
What sort of organisation do you work for?
I work for the developers of the UK's first geothermal powerplant.
Where else could you work as a Community Engagement and Education Officer?
You could do this job for most industries. There are community officers in sports, events, marketing, science and technology, even in the arts!
What formal qualifications and/or previous work experience did you need to get your job?
Driving License.

If this wasn’t your first job after your studies, what did you do in-between?
I was a geoscientist for a small mining environmental consultancy. I did a lot of geochemical modelling and report writing on a variety of mining projects globally.
Do you work a regular length day/week, or are shifts involved?
Typically I work 9-5, 5 days a week. Sometimes I do have to work evenings and weekends, but I get time off in lieu (TOIL).
Do you travel, either within the UK or overseas, in your role? How often?
I often travel within the UK, typically leaving the county about 4 times a year for different events. There are opportunities to travel to other countries too.
What opportunities do you have for developing your skills in your current role?
Lots of opportunities to speak in public, design resources, meeting politicians and councillors to discuss policy in geothermal.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy engaging with people who may not understand what geothermal is, and answering their questions - helping them to access science. I also enjoy giving careers advice to students in schools, helping them to feel confident in themselves and their abilities.
What advice or extra information do you wish you’d had before starting this career?
I wish I had more of an understanding of human psychology, my job is communication, so it would be useful to understand how people think.
What position would you like to hold in 5 years time?
I would like to work in communications for mining companies, helping them get their social license to operate whilst protecting the people close to the projects.
